Black River Fish and Wildlife Management Area

Encompassing 3,020 acres in the northern part of Chester Township, the area provides opportunities for such activities as fishing, hunting, canoeing, cross-country skiing and hiking.

Hacklebarney State Park

Of the park’s 890 acres, 708 acres off State Park Road in Chester Township. Primarily wooded area offers picnic tables, playground, fishing and hiking trails along the Black River. Open daily from 8 a.m. until sundown.

Bamboo Brook Outdoor Education Center & Willowwood Arboretum

The center’s 100 acres includes fields, woodlands and a formal garden that was developed over a 30-year period by noted landscape architect Martha Brookes Hutcheson. Guided nature hikes, hiking trails, meeting rooms and rest rooms are available. Willowwood Arboretum’s 130 acres features 3,500 species of native and exotic plants, as well as two small formal gardens, a historic residence dating to 1792, nature trails and rest
room facilities.

Black River County Park & The Cooper Mill

The 578-acre park offers hiking trails, fishing and rest room facilities. Also located within its confines is the Cooper Mill, the oldest existing
mill in Morris County, which offers seasonal events, exhibits and educational programs.

Elizabeth D. Kay Environmental Center

This 223-acre property features meadows, flowering trees, shrubs, wildflowers and hiking trails as well as an information/visitors center, meeting rooms and rest rooms. Activities include educational programs, fishing and guided nature hikes.

Lewis Morris County Park & Cultural Center

Totaling 1,154 acres, the park offers several miles of hiking, biking and equestrian trails, a group camping area, six picnic areas, three ball fields, a playground and a Parcourse Exercise Circuit. Sunrise Lake area includes facilities for boating, fishing, swimming and picnicking. The bath/boathouse includes rest rooms.

Loantaka Brook Reservation

South St, Kitchell Rd. and Loantanka Way

Encompassing more than 570 acres, the reservation includes four distinct areas: Seaton Hackney Stables, South Street Recreation Area, Loantaka Brook Park at Kitchell Road and the Loantaka Way trail access area. Five miles of trails provide biking, jogging, hiking, horseback riding and cross-country skiing opportunities. Three ball fields also are available along with picnic facilities, group shelter, fitness stations, rest rooms and a playground.

Mount Paul Memorial Park

This 285-acre tract features some hiking trails in its mostly wooded and undeveloped land.

Patriots’ Path

A gradually developing network of hiking, biking and equestrian trails that link several dozen federal, state, county and municipal parks, historic sites and other points of interest across Morris County. The current system offers more than 50 miles of trails.

Schooley’s Mountain County Park

Facilities in this 797-acre park offer boating in season, fishing and ice skating on an eight-acre lake. Also included are a ball field, a play area, a 470-foot floating bridge, a natural amphitheater and a group shelter. The Schooley’s Mountain Park Lodge is available for corporate or private rental.

Evans Family Forest Preserve

Primarily wooded, this 110-acre tract is available for passive recreation such as hiking.
